RSHE
Supporting Our Children to Grow, Stay Safe and Thrive
At Crockham Hill CE Primary School, we are committed to providing high-quality Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE) that supports every child’s personal development, emotional wellbeing, and understanding of the world around them.
What is RSHE?
RSHE is part of the broader Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education curriculum. It helps children to:
-
Build healthy friendships and respectful relationships
-
Understand and manage emotions
-
Stay safe in real life and online
-
Learn about personal health, hygiene, and well-being
-
Understand changes in their bodies as they grow
From September 2020, Relationships and Health Education became statutory in all primary schools in England. Sex Education remains non-statutory in primary schools, though many schools choose to provide age-appropriate content to help prepare pupils for later life.
Our Approach
We teach RSHE in a safe, inclusive and respectful environment. Lessons are age-appropriate and designed to meet the needs of our pupils in line with government guidance. We use resources that are evidence-based and approved by the school’s leadership team.
Topics are introduced gradually, with sensitivity and care. Children are encouraged to ask questions, explore their feelings, and respect the views and boundaries of others.
We teach RSHE through a combination of class discussion, storytelling, games, videos, and written activities. Lessons are delivered by class teachers and, where appropriate, external visitors such as school nurses.
Parental Involvement and Right to Withdraw
We believe that working in partnership with parents and carers is essential. We share curriculum content in advance and encourage families to talk to us about any questions or concerns.
-
Relationships and Health Education is statutory and children cannot be withdrawn from these lessons.
-
Sex Education (beyond the national science curriculum) is non-statutory at primary level. Parents may request to withdraw their child from these specific lessons.
If you would like to discuss any aspect of the RSHE curriculum or wish to view teaching materials, please contact the school office.
